Leadership Essentials Series - So Here’s What To Do!

Last time I gave you a list of 10 biggest mistakes that bosses make, here's a list of things you can do to actually create a positive, energized work environment.

I would love to hear from all of you, let me know what your boss does, or maybe a boss from the past, what they’ve done within your department that really made your workplace a real pleasure.

For now here’s a short list, a few ideas with very brief explanations.

  1. Communicate a Vision –Vision is absolutely key in successful leadership. Whether you are at home or at work having everybody on the same page working towards the same goal is after all the objective. If you don’t create vision you’ll have everybody all over the place as far as what they are trying to accomplish. Your job is to create a picture for your staff (if at home, for your children) a picture so clear that they can hear, see and smell, absolutely feel how wonderful having the goal will be. The final part of creating vision is giving them a whole bunch of reasons why they should go for it.

  2. Foster Trust – They only way to do this is for you to first be trustworthy. Are you trustworthy? Do you do what you say you will do, when you will do it, how you will do it? Do you inform people of decisions as early as possible? Do you let them know when things have changed? The questions around trustworthiness are limitless…go on a self-discovery mission and discover for yourself if you are trustworthy.

  3. Express real appreciation - Not that “ I learned in a workshop I should say thank you “ crap. Really appreciate the fact that your staff, the people that you work with do a really good job. Realize that they don’t have to – many don’t.

Sincere praise is one of the most meaningful forms of inspiration and appreciation that can be offered from one human being to another. If you haven’t been comfortable with being grateful in the past, well I suggest you start getting comfortable with what is uncomfortable… then it won’t be uncomfortable anymore ?

That’s it for today folks, remember to always be compassionate good boss’s aren’t born, they’re taught!
