Leadership Essentials Series - Top Ten Mistakes Boss's Make
Gee I thought we could have
a little fun this week and take a look at the top ten biggest
mistakes boss’s make.
I have taken this information from some documented sources
including various training programs I have offered in the
past, and as well, what I believe to be far more valuable,
the information is coming right from you!
That’s right during training I’ve asked you guys
to come up with what you felt was the worst mistakes your
bosses have made and well here’s what you’ve come
up with:
In no particular order…
- Ignoring “bad attitudes” or poor behaviour
from other staff members (no backbone syndrome)
- Not dealing with tardiness or violations of department
rules/policy (no backbone syndrome)
- Not delegating and trying to do everything (this added
stress to bosses apparently is quite painful to everybody
else)
- Not giving employees authority to do their job start
to finish (micromanager/control issues)
- Being afraid to take chances/risks (how did you get the
job as boss syndrome?
- Not supporting your employees (ditto on #5)
- Trying to fix everything (control)
- Making all the decisions – not consulting your staff
at all (control)
- Not being proactive ( often times puppet syndrome)
- Gossiping, bad mouthing or any other unproductive, undesirable
detrimental behaviour, whether with your staff or amongst
your peers (don’t even get me going on this one syndrome!)
Now friends, with that said you can see that I could have
easily put together a list of a list 25 mistakes without blinking
an eye.
Lets be a little gentle with our bosses and understand that
for the most part the majority of mistakes they are making
are based in the fact they just don’t know what to do,
or how to handle it… so often times they do nothing.
Micromanaging or control issues are more about insecurity
within themselves, a deeply rooted personal belief often that
they aren’t good enough and they may be found out if
they give up too much control.
So with that said you can see that Boss’s are people
too! Boss’s there is really good training available
I know I offer some of it and I have the testimonials (countless)
from people that have attended and actually made a difference
in there performance at work!
For the rest of you I’m asking you to have some compassion,
but at the same time you certainly don’t have to put
up with a numb nut for a boss.
Just always remember, learn the skills (assertive communication),
practice the skills and then from a “place of love”
deal with your numb nut of a boss.
Until
next time
