Leadership Essentials Series - Essentials for Earning (yes earning) Respect

This one should be a synch for most of us, yet from what I’ve heard apparently some people are just oblivious as to what it is they are doing or not doing that’s getting them into a whole heap of trouble. You may want to pass this one on to a “friend” in need.

So here’s the short list on what we can do to earn or for that matter actually keep the respect we have...

  1. Know thyself - Know what you’re good at and know what you’re not good at. Then stop pretending to be good at what you’re not.

  2. Set goals for yourself, and then accomplish them. Did you know that most people that do not reach their goals quite simply didn’t reach them because they never actually made them? Setting goals is a huge self esteem booster, and also sends a clear message to the rest of the world (because many people don’t set goals) that’ you’ve got the courage to put your money where your mouth is.

  3. Take responsibility. Gosh especially you leaders out there! I mean if the leaders aren’t willing to be responsible how they heck do we expect anybody else to? (Including our children)

  4. Be accountable. That’s it; you took some action that well lets just say you’d be happier if you hadn’t. But you did, so bite the bullet and be accountable to results. Then take about 30 seconds and be certain to clearly decide what you will do differently next time.

  5. Communicate Powerfully. Now I could spend a full day on this one… but for now, at the very least “say what you mean, mean what you say”. Separate yourself from all the “fluff makers” out there.

  6. Commitments – follow through on them. If you change your mind and sometimes commitments change, have the courage to let everybody involved know that it’s changed and move on.

  7. Be a confident – Be the person that other people can come to and know that their thoughts, feelings, words are safe – that means you won’t repeat anything that isn’t yours to repeat.

  8. Shut Up. Let people talk – they’ll love you for it!
