Dear, Subscriber
Some people believe that making news years
resolutions is a waste of time. " We make
then and break them all in the same week"
Absolutely that happens a lot.
The problem however isn't making a
resolution, the problem is in how we
state our resolution or goal and the
action plan we put in place to achieve
it. Or in many instances; the action
plan we don't put in place. Simply
saying " I will lose we.ight" doesn't
make us lose weight, Lord only knows
I'd be a skinny minnie by now.
So what's the problem?
Here are some classic examples of resolutions
and an explanation as to why we don't reach our
goals with them.
"I'm going to join a gym "
"I'm going lose wei.ght"
"I'm going to quit
smoking"
Making a resolution is the same thing as setting
a personal goal. In each of these examples
how we stated our goal we've already
set ourselves up for failure.
Take a closer look and consider the following
questions so help create a better goal.
- I'm going to join a gym -
When are you going to join a gym? Why are you
going to join the gym? What gym are you going to
join? Etc.
- I'm going on a diet and lose we.ight
- How are you going to lose weight?
When are you going to start? What
type of eating plan will you follow?
Will you exercise? What type of exercise
will you do? Will you stop doing
all the things they help you to lose
weight once you have the results you
want? How fast do you want to lose
weight? Etc.
- I'm going to quit
smoking - When are you going to quite
smoking? How are you going to quite smoking?
What are you going to do instead of smoking?
What will you do with all the money you save?
Etc.
These questions are the first step in
actually stating an effective goal/resolution
and then putting together an action plan to that
will keep you on track and accountable when your
not getting the results you want.
Making a commitment to our selves to
lose we.ight and value our health is
the most commendable of commitments
(and is also the top New Years resolution).
It takes great courage for us to step up
to the plate and say
" Crap - this is not what I want to look
like (or feel like, or be teaching my kids to do)
I want more, I want to make myself better, I want
to make my life better."
The fact is we need help to do it.
The habits we have around eating, health and
wellness have been "programmed" and "conditioned"
into us for a very long time. We need
information, clearly stated goals and an action
plan. Working one on one with an expert
(like a life coach) is a fantastic option for
those of us who are willing or able to invest a
little money into their quality of life.
For everybody else here's some
step-by-step instructions (although general) they
will get you on the road to successful
resolutions!
- Make S.M.A.R.T.
goals. - Smart goals are
specific, manageable, achievable, realistic and
trackable
- Create an Action Plan. - By
asking yourself questions you're actually
creating a clear picture as to how you will be
able to reach your goal. Be certain that
like the actual goal the Action Plan is also
S.M.A.R.T. Making an action plan will help you
to be accountable to yourself and the things you
say you want.
- Review and Fine Tune - Sit
down weekly and review your progress. See
what's working and what's not working. Then fine
tune your action plan and focus on success for
the following week.
People your good physical health is the foundation
to your good mental health and thus
your ability to deal with stressors
in every day life.
Make 2005 the year you made a
difference for yourself!
